Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions

We are open from 9am-5pm. Monday to Friday UK Time.

Definitely! At Autoway Salvage, we’ll help you sell your car or van regardless of its condition. If there are no usable parts left, we can easily find a buyer who is interested in purchasing your vehicle for scrap.

Collision damage – if your vehicle has been in an accident and has incurred damage, a straightforward sale can help you avoid the hassle of repairing and reselling it.
Insurance write-offs – If your car has been damaged and deemed an insurance write-off, it might be impossible to get it back on the road again.
Insurance buybacks – Have you been offered a buyback price for your vehicle from an insurance company that you’re unhappy with? Many people choose to sell their vehicle to us instead.
Non-runners – Even if your car won’t start, we still want it. We’ll come to collect it from its location; you don’t have to arrange transport to a scrapyard.
Defective cars – Having electrical issues? Problems with the steering? Engine stalls? Regardless of the issue, you can still sell your defective car for cash.

We accept any car, regardless of its condition, and will buy any vehicle. It doesn’t matter if your car is considered a total loss! For vehicles from 2014 onwards, they must start, run, and have a current MOT to qualify for higher prices, which will be confirmed through an inspection.

The value of your salvage vehicle will depend on various factors, including its age, make, model, and overall condition. For a quick and easy quote, fill out the form at the top of this page.

When we issue a quote, it will be contingent upon meeting the following essential criteria:
-you must be able to present photographic identification and proof of residence;
-your vehicle should not have any outstanding finance obligations, such as a hire purchase or loan agreement;
your vehicle must be devoid of any extra waste, including litter or rubbish;
-your vehicle is powered by petrol, diesel, electric, or hybrid engines as originally manufactured;
-your vehicle (or light van) cannot exceed 9 seats (meaning it should not be a motorbike or heavy goods vehicle); and
-your vehicle must be accessible (if needing collection), which means it should be parked on solid ground with inflated tyres, ensuring it can be safely winched onto a recovery vehicle.
-If any of these requirements are not met, the initial quote may need to be adjusted. You will have the chance to provide additional information.

We may ask you some questions about your car’s condition such as:

  • What’s the approximate mileage?
  • Do you have the keys?
  • Has it ever been written off?
  • Does it start and drive?

If you’re unable to answer any questions, we may make some assumptions about your car’s condition. Your answers and our assumptions will be shown to you alongside your quote.

These questions are in addition to the minimum requirements

You need to inform us about any parts you have removed prior to accepting an instant quote, or you can use the additional info box when you agree to the quote. The collection company will get in touch to let you know if the price will change based on the parts you’ve taken out.

Yes, having the keys makes the process much smoother for us. However, if you don’t have access to the keys, please contact us as soon as possible to inform us. If you’ve told us your car starts and drives, you’ll need to provide the keys.

We accept scrapping for all car and van brands, including Ford, VW, Vauxhall, Fiat, Renault, BMW, Audi, Peugeot, and many others! At Autoway Salvage, we can recover and scrap any brand of car or van; just enter your registration for an instant quote!

If your vehicle can be salvaged, we might try to find a buyer for it. If it is not salvageable, we may remove any usable parts and sell those separately. Your vehicle will then be depolluted and recycled in our partner authorised treatment facility in compliance with environmental regulations.

To receive a tax refund, you need to notify the DVLA that you have sold your vehicle. This can be done after the vehicle is collected by completing the V5C (logbook) – section 9 or section 4 on the new logbooks issued in April 2019 (yellow section), which the driver will fill out on the collection day and return to you. You will then need to send this to the DVLA (we recommend using recorded delivery). If you do not have the V5C, we suggest sending a letter to the DVLA using the collector’s address to inform them that you are no longer the registered keeper as of the date and time of the collection. For further details regarding the tax refund, please contact the DVLA or visit https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-tax-refund.

Yes, it is your legal duty to inform the DVLA that you are no longer the owner or keeper of the vehicle. The recycling center will fill out their information on Section 9 of the V5C and return it to you. This should be sent to the DVLA immediately. Alternatively, you can notify the DVLA online by visiting their website. If you do not possess a V5C, you should write a letter to the DVLA to inform them of the ownership transfer as soon as the vehicle has been given to the recycling center. You are transferring ownership to the recycling center, and their business details should be provided to the DVLA. You are NOT transferring the vehicle to Autoway Salvage.

No, we don’t accept cars with outstanding finance. You’ll need to settle this before you accept the quote.

Unfortunately, it’s difficult for us to load and secure a vehicle with no wheels onto our trucks, we need them on wheels to get them on the truck without damaging the truck bed and we use straps secured around the wheels to hold it tight and secure onto the truck.

Your Payment

Since October 1, 2013, we can no longer accept cash as a permissible payment for scrap cars. The Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013 was enacted in England and Wales to combat scrap metal theft. This addresses illegal activities that could occur ‘under the radar.’ Often, stolen cars were quickly scrapped, making it impossible to trace them. This legislation also requires you to provide your full identification details. For more information about the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013, click here.

Payments are processed either via bank transfer or cheque. We collect your payment information when we schedule the pickup of your car. Normally, payment is made within 24 business hours. If your vehicle is picked up on Friday afternoon, the payment might not appear in your account until Monday. Please allow 24 business hours for bank transfers to be completed. The law prohibits cash payments for scrap vehicles.

We aim to get back to you within 24 hours, although sometimes it can take a little longer depending on the type of vehicle that has been offered.

In some cases, your payment might not be available until Monday. If it hasn’t arrived by Tuesday, please get in touch with us.

Salvage Collection

The scrap and salvage vehicle buyers we collaborate with will pick up your car or van from an easily accessible location of your choice, which is generally your home. They will send a collector with a Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) designed to remove your vehicle.

Each collector and everyone else employed at the Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF) purchasing your vehicle will be skilled, professional, and legally certified for their position. In accordance with the scrap metal dealers act of 2013, they will transport your vehicle for recycling at their ATF

It’s simple; the choice is yours! You can schedule your collection date and either an AM or PM slot, or we can contact you after you finish and arrange a time that fits your schedule.

If your vehicle is relatively close to your home, you can still use your postcode to obtain a quote initially. If you’re unsure, use the postcode for where the car is located. In either situation, we will need the collection address details first if you decide to accept any quotes fro

We provide a nationwide collection service, so we likely have a scrap car and van collection option near you. To find out, simply enter your registration and postcode at the top of this page, and we will inform you of the nearest location!

All UK Mainland Postcodes are covered for collections….for FREE!

With Autoway Salvage, you won’t even have to step outside your house! Sell your car for scrap or salvage through us, and we’ll arrange for the collection of your vehicle at no cost to you.
Our professional vehicle buyers will pick up your car from your local area across the UK, and the removal can be scheduled within days of you accepting an offer.

Documents/Identity Requirements

You do not need a valid MOT certificate to scrap your vehicle with us; we can collect your car without it.

All you need to do is gather a few necessary documents – your photo ID, V5C log book, and any service/MOT records – and we’ll take care of everything else. We’ll even manage the paperwork! After your vehicle is scrapped, all you have to do is notify the DVLA of its disposal.

It’s easy to lose paperwork, but as long as you have a photo ID, you can usually get your scrap car collected even without your V5C. You should inform the collection company in advance about the lost V5C, in case it causes issues.

The Scrap Metal Dealers Act (read it here) mandates that we verify your identity when you hand over your scrap car. This requirement applies throughout the UK.
A valid photo-card driving licence is sufficient to confirm your full name, date of birth, and residential address.
If you do not possess a photo-card driving licence, you can provide an alternative form of photo ID along with separate proof of your address. You’ll need one item from each of the two Government-approved lists below.

Accepted forms of photo ID:
• Current UK passport
• Valid passport issued by an European Economic Area country
• Valid UK biometric immigration document.

Accepted proof of address (which must not be older than 3 months):
• Bank or building society statement
• Credit or debit card statement
• Council tax statement or demand letter
• Utility bill (e.g., gas, electricity, water) but not a mobile phone bill.

You do not need valid insurance to scrap your vehicle with us; we can collect your car without it. Please remember that it’s illegal to drive without proper insurance, so you should arrange for us to pick up your car at no cost.

You need to inform us about any parts you have removed prior to accepting an instant quote, or you can use the additional info box when you agree to the quote. The collection company will get in touch to let you know if the price will change based on the parts you’ve taken out.

No, absolutely not. Providing the car meets the conditions stated within the booking confirmation then the price you’ve been offered is the price you’ll be paid – guaranteed.

No, unfortunately, it’s not possible to drop your car off with our scrap partners – but we can arrange collection from any location that suits you.

Salvage Collection

To change or cancel your collection, please reach out to us via phone or email. Ideally, inform us at least 24 hours prior to the planned collection. When cancelling or rearranging, you must provide your name along with your registration or reference number. If you are cancelling, we would appreciate knowing the reason to enhance our service

Yes, we arrange a time and day most suitable for you, we work on 1 and a half hour slots so it gives our drivers plenty of time to deal with each vehicle meaning they are always on time, we have been using this system for many years and it always keeps us on track.

It’s quite simple, just arrange a time with your garage for us to pick it up from them, send us over a picture of your V5 or Photographic ID and as soon as we get to the car, we will transfer your payment over to your bank account and return a picture of our purchase Invoice showing vehicle details and our company details, once you are happy, we will take your vehicle away.

All we ask is that you take anything of value out of the vehicle and don’t leave any household rubbish in there, the vehicles are processed the same day which means anything left in the car will also be crushed.

Yes, the registered owner or keeper doesn’t have to be present. For legal reasons, we do need someone to be with the car, and able to show their proof of ID and a proof of address.

No. It’s important that your car is free of rubbish and personal belongings – as our scrap partners are not equipped to deal with anything other than the car.
